Mounting DocMoto as a drive

DocMoto is a standards based WebDAV server. As such it can be mounted as a drive which can be accessed directly through Finder. This article explains how to set this up, and the limitations.

Firstly the limitations. Whilst DocMoto can be mounted as a drive we DO NOT recommend using the technique for anything other than viewing files.

The reason for this is that DocMoto does not support versioning through OS X.

However mounting DocMoto as a drive to provide read only access to shared resources (such as those in an InDesign project) can be very powerful.

How you do it

  1. Open Finder, and select the "Connect to Server" option under the "Go" menu item.

  2. In the "Server Address" field enter the following http://:3983, eg http://docmotoserver.company.com:3983

  3. Now select the "Connect" option and the DocMoto server will mount as a read only drive.

  4. Now open Finder and you will see an entry matching your DocMoto server name under the "Shared" section.

  5. Click on the item, allow it to connect, entering your DocMoto user name and password, and you should see the contents of the DocMoto repository.

Technically that is all there is to it. However you might want to make sure your Mac automatically mounts the drive at logon. This will save you having to repeat the above steps each time.

How to configure your computer to mount DocMoto as a drive on startup

  1. Open "System Preferences".
  2. Select "Users & Groups".
  3. Select the "Login Items" tab.
  4. Drag and drop the drive from your desktop into area below the following text - "These items will open automatically when you log in:"

Additional Details

  1. Technically DocMoto will not allow a user more than one simultaneous connection to the DocMoto server. This is overridden though if multiple connections come from the same Mac. By this means then it is possible for a user to have DocMoto as a mounted drive for read only access and have the DocMoto client open to return edited files.

  2. Users wanting to edit files must do so through their DocMoto client and NOT via the mounted drive.
